Wednesday night had a “playoff basketball” feeling to it. The new-look Brooklyn Nets and the young up and coming Atlanta Hawks squared off in a thrilling matchup that came down to the wire. The Nets vs Hawks game came down to overtime in which the Nets came out victorious with a 132-128 win.
The main headlines for Nets vs Hawks
Kevin Durant scored 32 points, while James Harden added 31 points to lead the Nets. Along with 31 points, Harden added 15 assists and was two rebounds away from a triple-double. Kyrie Irving added 26 points. As for the Hawks, Trae Young led the team with 28 points and 14 assists. Cam Reddish scored a season-high 24 points, while John Collins and De’Andre Hunter finished with 21 points each.
Harden flashing greatness…again
Say what you want about Harden’s maturity, but his ability to play basketball is off the charts. Harden claimed earlier this week that his maturity with Durant is why the team is playing well. That’s a bold statement from someone that was on a strip club tour just months ago and showed up to Houston fat and out of shape. Looking at the present, Harden’s gifts are off the charts. As long as he stays focused, the Nets are a legitimate contender.
Irving showed vintage flashes in Nets vs Hawks
There was a play that stood out from Irving from the game. Irving went up to the basket and tried to avoid Collins at the rim and impressively laid the ball. It was like watching vintage Irving show off his magician-like skills. Take a look for yourself.
After the game
When the game concluded, Durant and Irving delivered their jerseys to 2 Chainz, who is a Georgia native. The NBA said that jersey swaps are prohibited due to COVID-19 but this is the second time this season that Irving has done away with his in-game jersey.
Nets vs Hawks game analysis & commentary
Neither team ever pulled away too far in regulation. It wasn’t until overtime when Durant threw down a monster dunk that gave the Nets a 127-121 lead. The Nets led 129-126 with 40 seconds remaining and gave Atlanta a chance to tie after a turnover by Durant. However, Kevin Hueter’s long three-point attempt did not go in. After getting fouled, Harden sealed the win with two free throws with 4.6 seconds remaining.
Slow start for Harden in Nets vs Hawks
Harden scored just two points in the first quarter. He found his rhythm by midgame but it all goes back to being aggressive. Harden has been a great facilitator but he might be the best scorer on the team. Luckily, the Nets are in the middle of a three-game road trip, so head coach Steve Nash will get to have more practice time with this group.
Given up on Landry Shamet
Shamet didn’t play a single minute on Wednesday. It was finally time that Nash realized that Shamet should not be in the regular rotation. Bravo for a solid coaching move.
The Nets travel to Washington on Friday to take on the Wizards. The Wizards are dead last in the Eastern Conference with a 3-11 record. The Nets improved to 12-8 on the season.
